'BOH' SUNGEI PALAS TEA CENTRE

(CAMERON HIGHLANDS - Malaysia)

BOH is the market leader in tea production and distribution in Malaysia.

In 2003, BOH plantations commissioned  Hostasia to conceptualize, develop, build and operate a new tea centre in the Cameron Highlands. The centre is now a must see and is a focal point for tourists in the Malaysian Highlands. tour the tea centre click here:

The Tea Centre is based on an original concept created and developed by a small team of professionals led by Hostasia.

Hostasia retained the services of ZLG Design  Sdn. Bhd. to create a bold and contemporary design, to match Boh Plantations updated marketing.

Originally conceived as a “walkway” linking the tea manufacture to a spectacular view point, the new Tea Centre is 140 meters long and features a dramatic overhang over the tea bushes.

It encompasses:

  • a food & beverage area "the tea'ria" serving tea and snacks - backed up by a full kitchen

  • A retail shop for tea products and souvenirs

  • an information, exhibition and multimedia area about tea and Cameron Highlands

The functionality is enhanced by the very clean lines of a trendy architecture.

Designed with a contemporary random pattern, the centre met budget requirements by using simple materials such as metal, rough timber, bamboo, off-form concrete and aggregates to make a statement of modernity.

Its distinctive visual features make a striking contrast with the orderly rows of tea bushes covering the surrounding hills. Ultimately it does bring people together to sample one of the best expressions of Malaysian hospitality: Cameron Highlands’ Boh Tea.

The impressive main entrance features a six foot diameter solid brass tea rolling table (a tea manufacture apparatus) and is clearly the hub of the center, directing visitors towards the striking views of the refreshment area or towards the raised walkway. The walkway is framed by round timber inserts cut from recycled rubber wood and leads to an array of bamboo screened toilets, a tempting souvenir shop and the attention-grabbing exhibition area before guiding visitors to the factory visit.

Blissfully, the landscape designers resisted the urge to smudge the site with haphazardly planted blooms. Instead, using the cool climate of the highlands, they created a clean, sparkling look punctuated by islands of cannas, lilies, agapanthus, bamboos, red grasses and colorful dwarf hibiscus, contrasting with the orderly green of the rows of tea bushes and making the place fantastic for picture taking.

The Sungei Palas Tea Centre is already operational. It is open daily – except Monday – from 9am to 4:30 pm. Admission to the factory visit is free and information tours are conducted every 30 minutes.
